BiographyCoqui Calderon was born in the city of Panama in 1937. She finished her university degree at Rosemont College, Pennsylvania, USA in 1959, obtaining a BA with majors in Art History and History. She continued her art training in Paris, France at the Grand Chaumiere, the Academie Julian and The Sorbonne. She lives and works in Panama City.Coqui Calderon has etched for herself a prominent place in the pictorial Panamanian panorama. Her paintings are a technical task of quest and creativity, a complex continuous evolving through many phases. During four decades of analyzing human behavior, she has developed a style representative of her personal experience. Her artistic life is in service to rational imaging combined with a profound process of inner analysis, reflecting her own personal journey. She began as a representational artist, evolving later to the abstract, always excelling in the mastery of composition and with a marked interest in movement. After her stay in Paris, and later in New York, movement appears as the main characteristic of her work. From 1968 to 1980, she resided and painted in Panama; from 1980 to 1995 in Miami, Florida. She has returned to Panama where she composes landscapes and still life in pastels and acrylics, which together with their respective sketches on paper, illuminate her technical decisions and allow the viewer to appreciate the internal structure of her compositions. |
